Monologue Monday

Something lighter today. In 2008 Sara Beck had a wonderful idea of interviewing women and asking what they were looking for in a partner and then turning those interviews into a play. Sara, Jennifer Brewerton, Amy Symington and I did that and then performed "The List" at the Domino Theatre one act play festival in June that year and then later at the Toronto Fringe Festival. Here's one of my favorite monologues that I performed from an interview with a friend of mine.

Clarissa:

What am I looking for in a guy? He has to be focused and have a job. No, a career. Not some Jumbo video store job. Career. Much better word. Not that I have anything against Jumbo Video exactly. It’s just… if it’s something a high school student can do part time, it’s not a career.

He has to be educated. I guess that goes under intelligence. But not really. Someone could be street smart. Like Jumbo Guy.

Okay so I dated this guy. He worked at Jumbo Video. I mean, he was a manager, but still. He’d dropped out of university and worked at Jumbo and played video games. That’s it. And he didn’t see a problem with that. I wanted more for him. He was stuck. To get somewhere you need some sort of education, drive to get somewhere. He didn’t have it. So yeah, education.

He has to want a family. If they don’t they can go somewhere else. Two kids. Two or more and they can take care of each other. And as they get older then they can pay for my life. If there’s just one kid they don’t learn to share. Jumbo guy didn’t want two kids. He said that two kids would be too expensive.

Can’t be a workaholic. Work to live not live to work. If they’re gone till midnight at work, that’s when they’re more likely to be having sex with secretaries.

The type of job… I mean career… doesn’t matter. I just need him to have one.

Not like Jumbo Guy. With him I was like, “This is what you want to do with your life? Tell people what movies are good? And you don’t even do that. You just point.”
